Shaniwar Wada Pune: Bajirao Peshwa built the Shaniwar Wada in the year 1736. This is located in Pune, Maharashtra. This is considered to be a stately mansion as it was specifically constructed as ‘residence’ for Pehwas. The architecture depicts the Mughal design.
The artisans have managed exquisite designs and intricate carvings. The main door is of 21 feet facing the north. One of the gates is the very famous, well-known ‘Dilli Darwaza’ or Delhi gate. ‘Mastani Darwaza’ is another important gate in this wada. This was used by the mistress of Bajirao. The ‘Ganesh Darwaza’ faces the southeast and the ‘Khidki Darwaza’ is east facing. The fountain is another attractive feature of this structure. This is designed like a lotus with 16 petals.
The entire palace was caught in the 1827 fire, sparing the Mirror hall.. The remnants, at present, include nine bastions, five gates that enclose the total complex. The beauty of the Nagarkhana with intricate latticework and the sturdy pillars made of wood are one of the major attractions here. You can get a small glimpse of the wada in the center. The paintings here display different scenes of the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
